David Nalbandian lashes out at chair umpire Kader Nouni for not allowing him to challenge an overrule of a John Isner first serve at 8-8 on break point in the fifth set of his 4-6, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (5), 10-8 loss to the Amercian at the Australian Open. The linesperson called the ball out, Nouni overruled and called it in, and after a seemingly confused Nalbandian went to check the mark and came back and said he wanted to challenge, Nouni would not allow him to because he said the Argentine took too much time. A replay showed that the ball indeed was out

"Was a lot of noises, so I asked what happened, because the lineman called out," Nalbandian explained to reporters. "He told me he overruled it. And I say, Okay, I see the mark. I say challenge. Not a big deal. He don't want to do it. Too late. How many times everybody check the mark and ask for the HawkEye? So somebody from the umpires or ATP, somebody can explain to me this situation. I mean, what is this? This is a Grand Slam. Supervisor say it's umpire call. It's ridiculous playing this kind of tournament with this kind of umpires. What did the ATP do for this? I didn't understand in that situation, 8-all, break point. I mean, can you be that stupid to do that in that moment? What the umpires need, press? Name? Be on the picture tomorrow? Incredible. Anyway, I didn't lose for that, but that's was very bad situation. Was amazing."

Nalbandian, who lost his fifth five-set match at the Australian Open (he has also won six five-setters), said that the veteran Nouni is not qualified to be an umpire.

"Absolutely," he said. "No doubt. Nothing happen on the match, and in that moment, he call overrule, I call HawkEye, and he didn't give it. I never see something like that. So ATP have to check what they doing for the umpires. I mean, they practice? They what? I don't know."

Fallout from Argentina's failed DC campaign:

Tito Vazquez, whose contract as Argentine Davis Cup captain was not renewed after his team’s final-round loss to Spain, takes issue with one of his players, David Nalbandian, whom he has had problems with in the past.

"I didn’t see Nalbandian as a positive leader, but I was willing to give him another chance," Vazquez told TyCSports. "I don’t think the same way as Nalbandian, and do not share many of the [ideas] about leadership."

Vasquez added that Spaniard Rafael Nadal is "a guy who you want to have on your team. He’s a motivational leader and was in the stands encouraging [his team]."

Martin Jaite, who once coached Nalbandian, is said to be the leading candidate for the captain’s position. Vazquez said that a Davis Cup captain "should not be friends with the players."

I think a few may already have been aware of this - it's a shame at any rate:

Former Wimbledon finalist David Nalbandian will miss the French Open after an illness hampered his recovery from a hernia operation and a muscle injury.
Nalbandian lost six kilograms after his injury in March and his comeback had been hit by a fever that interrupted his training.
His spokesman, Bernardo Ballero, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the Argentine is "not right physically."
Ballero says the the former third-ranked player hopes to be back for Queens.

Don`t think i`ve ever had good news following Dahveed`s career lol.

David is now back on the practice court. A month after undergoing double surgery at a clinic in Buenos Aires, David has returned to the Argentine capital to begin his on-court training at the Vilas Club.

"Im back practising on the courts again. But I doubt if I will be playing in Madrid. I`ve been sick recently, so this has delayed me."
I still believe though im on course to play at least one event before Roland Garros."

My mistake. The final exhibition in South America is in Uruguay (Punta del Este).

Nalbandian on 2011:

It's been a very good off-season, which means good prospects for 2011. I`ve been busy, working to prepare for the new season and next week (to Auckland).

About Davis Cup in 2011.

"If Juan Martin and I are in good shape, then we can put up a good fight against Serbia in a hypothetical semifinal in Belgrade. There'll be four competitive singles matches indoors, what we'll be lacking is a doubles team. It's difficult but not impossible."

Q: Is the defeat against Spain at Mar del Plata 2008 still the thorn in your side?

It still makes me angry to have lost that final. It's a wound that's always going to be there because there's no way of going back and playing it again. And I think that it [the wound] is not going to close until we win [the Davis Cup] one day. Because if we win it now, I'd say, "this should've been the second time, not the first one". Incredible that we lost that tie.

Q: Let's look ahead at the future. On the first [of January], you'll turn 29. For the rest of your career, what's going to be more important, the ranking, a Grand Slam or the Davis Cup?

David: I have two, three more years left. I don't want to retire without having won the Davis Cup. It is my obsession, something special. It's the only title Argentina is still lacking in tennis. It would be incredible for the AAT, with all its shortcomings, to be able to say, "tennis has won all the titles at the international level". A Grand Slam is great as well but Argentina already has a few of those."
