Juan couldn't finish his first round match against Albert Ramos on his debut at Acapulco, an ATP 500 tournament. Due to dehydration, Pico received a medical timeout early in the second set after taking a 2-0 lead, and quickly faded in the scoreboard. Feeling dizzy and experiencing the extreme heat and heavy conditions of today's weather, Pico retired when trailing 6-7(2) 3-5 in a 2h11m marathon battle.

"It is never nice to retire in a match but I couldn't play anymore. I wish I could have finished my match against Ramos but unfortunately the heat and the tough conditions made it impossible for me to carry on."

"I am feeling well now. My next tournament will be the Indian Wells Masters, then I'll play Miami and then we will be back home to play Davis Cup, one of my greatest goals of this year."

Monaco's injury was officially diagnosed as a tear to the abdomen region, and will see him out for a minimum (but near maximum also) of about three weeks. This rules him out of not only Davis Cup and Indian Wells, but is also in doubt in the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami beginning March 24 where at best he'll have maybe had just under a week to recommence hitting and full training.

Further to the Destroyer's post:

Tennis.com: After losing both Juan Martin del Potro and David Nalbandian to injury, Argentina's Davis Cup team is now also facing the prospect of being without it's third-highest ranked player, Juan Monaco.

Monaco said he is doubtful for the tie after retiring down 5-4 to Juan Carlos Ferrero in the semi-finals of Acapulco on Friday with an abdominal injury.

"I think it is a tear. I'm very angry."

Juan Ignacio Chela looms as the potential replacement.

Juan Monaco admitted he will almost surely miss the Davis Cup tie this weekend with Sweden on Stockholm soil after sustaining a rib muscle injury in his Acapulco singles match with Ferrero a few days ago.

The team is already reeling from the injury withdrawals of Nalbandian and del Potro, leaving unheralded likes such as Horacio Zeballos, Eduardo Schwank and Leonardo Mayer (who may have pulled the plug on his doubles QF in Delray Beach with Becker to focus on the task ahead) to fly the flag for the host nation.

If Soderling fires anywhere near his potential, surely the Swedes are looking hot prospects to progress with some degree of comfort.

Juan Monaco, in his loss to Viktor Troicki yesterday, showed further signs that he was yet to overcome the hip injury that forced him to retire prematurely from Tokyo last week.

His movement was nowhere near best, and he appeared to have some discomfort on the service motion when throwing the ball toss up and having to reach to execute the serve.
