Fans and viewers watching last night’s tennis match between Alexandr Dolgopolov and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga certainly got everything that they could have ever asked for. The match was incredibly close and had to be finished early this afternoon because of a rain delay.

When the match was called last night on account of the rain and because it was already close to midnight, each player had won one set, and it was on serve in the third set. Both players were playing incredibly high-percentage tennis.

The set points in particular were an indicator of just how hard each player was trying for the win. Tsonga and Dolgopolov were hitting angled shots, deep shots, and drop shots to try to change up the pace of the match.

When they got on the court today, the match remained on serve until Dolgopolov finally broke Tsonga at the last moment possible to win the third set 7-5 and take the match. However, Dolgopolov’s day is not quite over.

Since it’s the men’s fourth round, he will have to face Rafael Nadal later in the day with only several hours to rest and prepare for this next challenge. Dolgopolov is quickly rising in the ranks of the ATP. He is seeded 21st in this tournament.

I was massively impressed with the Dolg at the Australian Open. His demeanor on court, his fluid movement and spectacular shot making suggests a very bright future. Whether he becomes a top ten player or a David Nalbandian type has a lot to do with how much consistency he can gain. If he can find a way to maintain his style and lower the errors, no one is safe.

Dolgopolov will move at least 14 spots from 46 to 32 or better in the ATP rankings.

Being a big Dolgopolov fan, I for sure noticed he was looking very smart on court against Baghdatis, after signing a new deal with Adidas.

Increasing his ranking by nearly a 100 spots from the beginning of the season, Dolgopolov is currently ranked No. 55 in world, but was ranked as high as No. 39 in July.
