| | im going to go against the grain here, i think ward represents great value (you guys may agree), ward decided to move to spain for his tennis education which I believe was a smart move - having friends like ferrero will certainly help. He is an unknown quantity to most outside the tennis loop but showed some promise against a quality opponent safin. I think he is worth a small punt. Bogdanovic is pretty average and I feel ward has the greater tennis potential. |

| | Bogdanovic was comfortable in qualifying here despite dropping a set to #721 ranked Brazilian Bruno Soares, he beat Kunitsyn and Falla both in straight sets. Wildcard Ward played quite well last week at Queen's taking the first set against Safin. He took advantage of a very slow start from the Russian, although to be fair he was getting good depth on his groundsrokes and he was also impressive on serve. He didn't really look overly convicing mind. Bogdanovic has a good serve and is a far better player allround than Ward, He has a good backhand and also has vast experience compared to James. He beat Hyung-Taik Lee and Jamie Baker at Queen's last year before narrowly losing to Roddick in the 3rd round but has not at all kicked on from there. Ward has only ever competed in 2 ATP events (not surprisingly he lost 1st round both times) and his record at Futures level is not convincing to say the least either (58-53). Despite the lack of glamour this tie offers and despite the reletively short odds available on the converted Serbian, this looks like a very strong bet to me. Bogdanovic 8/15 Ward 9/5. |

| | The match that guarantees a Brit will see round two action. Both players have effective serves and Ward showed in his match against Safin at Queens he is capable of hitting an Ace per game which is a pretty decent ratio. Bogdanovic has had a pretty mediocre season to date but has had a decent run in qualies this week which may well see some improvement from the lefty. It has to be said Bogdanovic looked as though he would easily make the top 100 a few years ago but has been something of a disappointment on that score. Ward is some 200 places below Bogdanovic in the rankings but I suspect this will be a close match. Ward will certainly have gained some self belief after taking a set off Safin but Bogdanovic has the greater experience on this stage. |
