Zuzana Ondraskova has been a journeywoman throughout her career and is still playing the majority of her tennis at ITF level at age 28. Her grass record reads a mere 7-7 without a win at the main draw here, though she did qualify this week with wins over young up-and-comer Morita as well as Dzehalevich who has shown she has a future. She has a fast serve but does struggle with rhythm often throwing in a fair few double faults, and will need to change her tactics on the quicker grass surface that is not conjucive to her spin style of game. She loves the clay where she makes a lot of her results, and has a poor record in Grand Slam events as well as against top 40 opponents. Vaidisova, who it's been well documented is completely out-of-form, made the QFs last year with wins over Azarenka and Mauresmo before falling so narrowly to Ivanovic and has a big game for the grass. Her serve is one of the finest in the WTA when it is firing, and she loves dominating her opponents with a barrage of heavy groundstrokes. She is super athletic and usually oozes self-confidence, however that has been nowhere to be seen in recent times suffering 8 losses in her last 10 including unforgivables against Govortsova, Mattek (6/3 6/0) and Benesova. She has lost her past 3 against countrywomen despite being the top-ranked Czech player, but surely this is the ideal match up for her to regain much-needed confidence. There is more to the story though - Nicole split from stepfather and long-time coach Alex Kodat which also coincided with a start of a romance with ATP player Radek Stepanek, and has now turned to David Felgate who was the coach of Tim Henman to help change the fortunes. Benesova, after knocking her best friend out of RG, said to the media that she put Vaidisova's results down to the fact she was "in love and so happy", which could suggest a distraction from tennis. Given Felgate's efforts with Henman on the grass, you'd think he'd be the master strategist for her to come up with the desired results, and with the talents and pedigree she has it would be an absolute tragedy to see her bow out here. Give her one last try.
