| | My favourite girl Govortsova has improved somewhat lately - she beat Ruano Pascual, Bartoli and Vesnina on the green clay and also notched a win over Knapp in Rome before taking eventual semi-finallist Pironkova to two tie-breakers in Istanbul. The erratic Belarussian, who lacks plenty of self-belief, is average on the clay but has never contested a French Open. Fedak, who is 5 years older but ranked 102 places below the over-rated Govortsova, has struggled to live up to her promising 2007 form (beat Szavay, Knapp, Bacsinszky, Dechy, A Bondarenko, Krajicek, Rezai) but got some good match practise under her belt in nearby Strasbourg last week winning two qualifying matches before losing to the in-form Perebiynis. Govortsova made the travel from Turkey to France and has had a slightly interrupted lead-up, and has struggled at Grand Slam level. Her serve, at 6 foot, is supposed to be one of her go-to shots (along with her OK backhand wing) has been letting her down and has been broken a staggering 32 times in her last 4 tournaments and has also been bagelled on four occasions (including one double-bagel to Kleybanova in Berlin). She's about as unconvincing and uninspiring as a number 37 in the world gets, and there's no reason why the vaster experience of Yuliana can't push her all the way here. |

| | Szavay had great lead-up form with an impressive run in Amelia Island. She played great tennis against Srebotnik but unfortunately came up short in a tough 6-4 7-6 loss to Lindsay Davenport in the quarters which was no mean feat. She is the Hungarian number one and last week reached a career high 15 despite a patchy start to 2008. She is back to her favourite clay surface where she had so much success last year, and will be looking to atone for her narrow loss to Fedak at the Gold Coast last year. Fedak has struggled of late and is only 50% on the clay in recent times and she has only won one main draw match here in four attempts. Szavay has the benefit of a very fast serve that should get Fedak on the stretch, and will look to dominate the baseline rallies with her tough double-fisted backhand. She edges Fedak in all areas and especially on this surface should have too much smarts. |

| | Yep, Razzano hadn't hit full straps then maliprofi and I'm all with you on this one. Razzano has a top game for all surfaces because she is extremely solid and makes few unforced errors, whilst at the same time having an ability to be controlled in her aggression. She hasn't been in as good a form as she was late last year, but she's had a bit of a freshen up and should have too much class for Fedak who requires qualifying these days to get into a lot of her main draw entries. She did exactly that here - beat Stevenson and Voskoboeva in a marathon 3 setter - but things are much tougher here. Frenchlady may have a slow start because she has lost 3 in a row and Fedak has the benefit of a few clay matches under her belt unlike her opponent, but I expect Virgine to reel her in so possibly a 3 setter or at least two tough sets. |
