| | Voegele is a youngster on the rise from Switzerland and she boasted some impressive results in qualifying defeating Arn, Stephens and the lively Hradecka to cement her spot in the main draw. She is bound to be fighting nerves as this her first time on the big occasion, not so though for her opponent the wily and experienced Pennetta. The Italian enjoys this terrain and aside from the elite top 10 is one of the more consistent players on tour. She has few weaknesses from the back of the court with quick movement, good footwork and very capable groundstrokes either in defense or attack, but her serve is the only liability. She often struggles to serve out sets and matches, but you'd hope that on an outside court in the first round against an opponent like Voegele that that wouldn't be a factor. Pennetta is quality material and will be looking to start off in style to avenge some poor performances at Flushing Meadows in the past. |

| | You could call me crazy on face value, but youngster Sefanie Voegele is massive value in this match. Maria Kirilenko is venturing to her least favoured surface (she is 1-5 in the past 12 months) and has lost first round here both in 03 and 07 in her only two attempts. Since reaching the fourth round of the Aus Open, the Russian beauty has lost 6 of 7 (the 6 being in a row currently) and she has lost all confidence. The Swiss is a recognised rising star in her home country and, currently 18 years of age, won the ITF Hyderabad and Torun tournaments last year and the Tel Aviv tournament the year prior. She defeated two seeds en route to qualifying here and has therefore got some good matches under her belt, whilst Kirilenko only has her doubles win with Pennetta to speak for yesterday. She has travelled from Qatar, to India, to the USA and now to Portugal in the space of a month and, when not winning, this hefty travel schedule is bound to take its tole. LAst year Maria lost to Nina Ozegovic, a young up-and-coming qualifier in this event last year. There's no reason why she can't do the same here at enormous odds. She is a good baselienr with a decent serve, and has taken sets off Sugiyama and Molik in Fed Cup in recent years as a junior. |
