| | Cornet won this match-up on grass when she was a little-known youngster at Wimbledon, and 18 months on has only gone from strength-to-strength. For someone so consistent, it was strange to see her go on a recent 4-match run of outs, but she put pay to that with a blistering win over Zheng here in the opening round crushing the Chinese's serve winning 55% of all return points. She is super quick, is tough in defense, has no problems hitting away the short ball when being the aggressor and has the heart of a lion. She has a suspect serve, but that is disguised by her work ethic and the fact she looks at landing the ball in on a regular occasino with depth placement and variety instead of trying to hit it too hard like some of the other younger girls. Kirilenko is an unreliable yet dangerous player, and in the 1st round she took care of Savchuk breaking the Ukranian 4 times. She won't be favoured by the fact these indoor courts aren't as quick as normal, and that will favour the Frenchgirl who will sure to make her hit the extra shot on nearly every occasion. Maria is just 1-2 at this event, just 2-4 in the past 12 months and has lost to similarly gritty players Schiavone, Zakopalova, Niculescu, Errani, Zheng, Jankovic, Yan and Medina Garrigues in 2008. Look for that to continue here. |
