| | Jelena will win this and wouldnt surprise me if she won in straight sets. She is starting to improve and is playing a player who hasnt shown any form that represents her odds. Jelena my best of the day |

| | Bacsinszky is another suffering from secnod-year blues and she comes into this event in horrid form having lost 7 of her past 9 since making a surprise appearance at the Antwerp semis in Feb where she took a set off Henin. Her claycourt form is overly miserable since making the transition from ITF to WTA in recent times, and the comeback kid and former no. 5 in the world Jelena Dokic will fancy her chances. The former child trouble has won 12 matches in a row with titles in Florence and Caserta (both in Italy) therefore she hasn't had to move camps too much and is looking fitter than ever after seeing her in a Melbourne newspaper not too long ago. She is an aggressive baseliner who hits flat and accurate from the back, but reports state she's done a lot of work on her fitness and movement. Her serve is decent, and whilst she never used to be known for her claycourt exploits, her record does seem to disprove that somewhat. She will be hungry for more ranking points and a solid lead-up before next week's French Open and looks well set to make it through to the second round. |

| | Watch out for this game - a big danger game for the Aussie. She "rolled her ankle" in Hobart, in what appeared to be a staged injury to allow her to make the last-minute trip to take up her wildcard entry for the Aus Open qualifying. Marina Erakovic, at only 19 years of age, made the Auckland semis last week including a marvellous victory over world number 23 Vera Zvonareva. She is a rising player with good prospects, and she served tremendously well in that match, producing a high percentage of first balls into courts and on the big points. Dokic has been in reasonable form, but her mid-match lacklustre performance against Martina Muller (a player who I have little time for) was nothing short of disastrous, but luckily she recovered to save herself from complete embarrassment. Dokic is very aggressive, and likes to hit the lines with her shots, so her forehand weapon is going to be the key here. She'll need to be moving well to counteract the serve of Erakovic, but does have the advantage of the home crowd support behind her. Expectations haven't always favoured Dokic's results in the past, so it will be interestnig to see how she copes with this. If she gets on top early, it may be early curtains for the Kiwi, but that's a big if for mine. |

| | Match of the day this one. Jelena Dokic, who wasn't given a wildcard to the Aus Open and now needs to go through qualifying, was brilliant at times against the under-achieved Martina Muller but again showed her lack of matchplay when she lost the second set 6-0 after completing losing her way for a while. In a similar fate, Flavia Pennetta came back from a 4-1 opening set deficit to win that set 6-4 over the talented rising star Agnieszka Radwanska, only to see the second set flash by quickly 1-6, before rallying to take the 3rd set 6-2. Pennetta is a hard hitter and plays all angles of the court really well, and is deceivingly difficult to break on serve. We know that Dokic is an aggressive player who favours her forehand, but she too also an effective serve but does tend to struggle if forced to produce too many second deliveries. Dokic, if she wins here, will have little time to arrive in Melbourne to enter qualifying (which means no Aus Open for her), but surely she wouldn't throw the match. I actually am picking her as I think she is becoming ripe at the right time, and she notably loves playing in Australia. The speed and bounce of these courts suits her game down to a tee, and is massive value at around the $4 mark. |
