Monday signalled Ladies Day at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, celebrated by a special one-set exhibition match between WTA World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark and 2010 Roland Garros champion Francesca Schiavone of Italy.

Wozniacki was beaten 6-4 on Court Central by the well-supported Schiavone, but enjoyed the experience of playing at the Monte-Carlo Country Club. “It’s an honour to play here and to play with Francesca,” said the Dane. “I know it’s a men’s tournament, but to be able to play a set here was unbelievable. It’s like my home here, I live just up the street, and Francesca has a lot of Italian fans here. I had fun.”

Female fans in attendance on Monday were presented with flowers and discount vouchers to use at Façonnable and Sergio Tacchini. There was also a poetry contest, a quiz about the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters and a fastest serve contest at Ricoh to take part in.

Schiavone still on the sidelines with her wrist injury, pulling out of Portoroz next week. A return date is unknown at this stage.

French Open champion Francesca Schiavone has withdrawn from next week's Slovenia Open because of a wrist injury.

Organizers said Wednesday the WTA had informed them that Schiavone will miss the tournament due to tendinitis in her left wrist.

Schiavone, who became the first Italian woman to win a Grand Slam title last month, was to be second-seeded at the tournament in Portoroz, Slovenia.
Third-ranked Jelena Jankovic of Serbia is the top seed at the $220,000 event.

After winning Roland Garros Francesca Schiavone will be at a career high of world number six come Monday.

Francesca Schiavone, when a set up against Monica Niculescu yesterday, had her price drift out to even money on Betfair suggesting she received a medical timeout half way during that second set.

Niculescu, pre-match, was paying over 3s so to back her into $1.80 when a set down would tend to suggest somebody knew something about the Italian's well-being or lack thereof.
