| | Arantxa Rus, the 17 year old junior world number 3, is coming off some solid form at ITF level having made the semis and claiming another title in claycourt lead up events to the RG juniors where she made the semis. The young Dutch girl, who returns here to her home tournament a year after being humbled 6-1 6-1 by a red-hot Alona Bondarenko in the corresponding round, won the 2008 girls singles at the Australian Open and is well regarded as a huge prospect for the future and a girl with experience and calmness beyond her years. She is a tallish, athletic young lady with a great physique, and even more to her advantage is that she plays left handed. She takes an usual backswing in her preparation, but hits the forehand very nicely with lots of topspin, flattens out double-fisted backhand with precision, and has no issue approaching the net where she is quite capable of finishing the points. It's all to do for Mariya Korytsseva, who has lost her only 2 tries on the grass to low-ranked opponents and is on a 3-match losing streak. The Ukranian is very short in stature, but is a busy player with her foot movement and thrives on getting the ball back to force the extra shot from her opponent. She struggles a little on the backhand side and can throw in the short-reply "moonball" from time-to-time, and given Rus' ability with the whip on her forehand side, she could well draw some errors with this tactic as Mariya doesn't like to hit above shoulder height. With the home crowd behind her and some brimming confidence, Rus is sure to be a nice value bet in a market that few queue up in on a normal day. |
