Further to @deuxface's post: Arantxa Sanchez Vicario apologizes for her statement against Anabel Medina Garrigues – Tennis News Spanish Federation Cup captain, Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, has apologized on Thursday for her statement earlier that aroused great hype in the Spanish media. She bashed the number one Spanish tennis icon, Anabel Medina Garrigues, in a press conference stating that ‘she was a quite problematic player’. This statement suddenly created a lot of hype and Spanish media inflated the news in the most agonizing way that forced Vicario to hold another press conference and clear all the doubts that she didn’t mean to hurt anyone’s feelings and her statement was wrongly understood by everyone. She stated, “No was never my intention to belittle Anabel Medina, whom I respect as a player and for his commitment to the national team. I ask forgiveness if I failed to express myself properly”. Captain further added, “I decided not to count Anabel Medina and Carla Suárez for the playoff before Slovakia by strictly technical issues, and that is the reason by which are not included in the call.” This press conference cleared the air and allowed all the team members to know the real meaning of their captain’s statement. Most of the players were reported to be angered by the way their captain bashed out one of their colleagues. Now the situation is under control and everyone is united for the cause to win the next tie that will take place in Puente Romano in Marbella on April 21 and 22 against one of the strongest tennis sides in the world, Slovakia. Garrigues tackled the situation wisely and calmly. She answered her fans via a twitter update, “I understand that a captain is free choose the team to consider better, but disqualify me on a personal level and dirtying my image, believe that it is out of place. We always have tried to help Spain in the 10 years that led representing it.” Slovakia is the favourite to win the upcoming tie of the Federation Cup but Spain has a home advantage and the support of the crowd. If they can pull off this upset, Vicario will feel accomplished and the stain on her image will be washed away. -- http://blogs.bettor.com/Arantxa-Sanchez-Vicario-apologizes-for-her-statement-against-Anabel-Medina-Garrigues-Tennis-News-a144981

Arantxa Sanchez Vicario: "Anabel Medina is a highly problematic player" Spanish captain Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario decides not to name her country's highest-ranked player to the Fed Cup team that will face Slovakia because she thinks that Anabel Medina Garrigues might disrupt team chemistry. "I have not chosen Anabel because she is not at her best, which can be seen in her results, and because it is quite problematic when a player does not get along with other players," Sanchez-Vicario said. "In Fed Cup you must have good atmosphere, fellowship, and she is not together with the rest of the players on this." Medina Garrigues, who has played 33 Fed Cup matches, told El Pais, "I understand that a captain is free to choose the team she considers, but to personally attack me and smear my image I think is out of line. I always tried to help Spain in the 10 years I've been representing it. I get along with some people better than others; that is the law of life. But that does not mean I want to stop playing for Spain. Let my mother come out and say that I am troubled, okay, because she's known me for 30 years. But Arantxa does not understand." After the story broke in Spain on Wednesday, Sanchez-Vicario then released a statement saying: "It was not my intention in any way disparage Anabel Medina, whom I respect as a player and her commitment to the national team. I apologize if I have not learned to express myself correctly. I decided not to have Anabel Medina and Carla Suarez for the tie against Slovakia for purely technical issues."
