"I think Federer, [Andy] Murray, Nadal and Djokovic are more consistent, more regular than other players over these three years," Ferrer said.

"They've played very good, and in this moment it is very difficult to become fourth in the world. I think it's a little bit different - the fifth or the rest of the players from the first four players in the world."

Ferrer added that he is pleased with his ranking and his aim for 2012 will be to stay in the top 10.

"I will try to win every tournament, but to win a grand slam or a Masters 1000 is difficult with these four players. At the moment it is very difficult," he said.

World No. 6 David Ferrer recorded his second win in as many weeks over No. 8 Jurgen Melzer as he dismissed the Austrian 6-3, 6-3 on Friday to reach the semi-finals of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell.

The Spaniard, who also defeated Melzer in the semi-finals of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters last week, saved four of the five break points he faced and capitalised on Melzer’s growing frustrations to break serve four times and prevail in 86 minutes.

The 29-year-old Ferrer is closing on his fourth ATP World Tour final of the season. He opened the year by triumphing in Auckland (d. Nalbandian) and the following month won his 11th ATP World Tour title in Acapulco (d. Almagro). Last week he reached his second ATP World Tour Masters 1000 final in Monte-Carlo, finishing runner-up to Rafael Nadal.

In his bid to reach the final of the ATP World Tour 500 clay-court tournament in Barcelona for the third time, two-time former runner-up Ferrer will face Nicolas Almagro. Ferrer takes a commanding 6-0 career lead into the clash, including victory over Almagro on clay in the Acapulco final in February.

World No. 6 David Ferrer notched his 11th clay-court win of the season as he cruised into the quarter-finals with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Victor Hanescu.

The Spaniard has lost just one clay-court match in 2011, having won the title at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel (d. Almagro) in Acapulco in February and reached his second ATP World Tour Masters 1000 final last week in Monte-Carlo (l. to Nadal). Against Hanescu, he maintained his impressive form as he dropped just nine points on serve and broke serve three times to prevail in 65 minutes.

The 29-year-old Ferrer improved to a 19-8 match record in Barcelona, having reached back-to-back finals in 2008-2009 (l. to Nadal). He next will face sixth seed Jurgen Melzer in a repeat of last week’s Monte-Carlo semi-finals.

Fourth seed Ferrer showed no signs of fatigue from his run last week to the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters final in his 6-2, 6-2 win over Argentine World No. 68 Carlos Berlocq. The Spaniard, who improved to 22-5 on the season, saved all four break points he faced.

Ferrer is seeded to meet fellow Top 10 player Jurgen Melzer in the quarter-finals; the pair also faced off last week in the Monte-Carlo semi-finals.

World No. 6 David Ferrer of Spain gave Milos Raonic a master class in clay-court tennis Thursday as he defeated the upcoming Canadian 6-1, 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters. While Ferrer has amassed six ATP World Tour clay-court titles in his career, including victory at Acapulco (d. Almagro) in February, Raonic is making his debut at an ATP World Tour clay-court event this week. The 20 year old had impressed with his opening two victories over Michael Llodra and Ernests Gulbis, but he did not have the game to trouble the more experienced Ferrer in the third round. The fourth-seeded Ferrer dropped just seven points on serve and broke Raonic twice in the opening set, before quickly establishing a break advantage in the second set. Raonic rallied briefly, reeling off nine straight points to level at 2-2, but Ferrer broke serve again to claim victory in 76 minutes. He also ended the Canadian’s breakthrough run at the Australian Open in the fourth round in January. The 29-year-old Ferrer is through to the quarter-finals at this ATP World Tour Masters 1000 clay-court tournament for the sixth time and will hope to reach the semi-finals for the second year in a row, when he faces either countryman Tommy Robredo or 11th-seeded Serbian Viktor Troicki.

Ferrer carried on with his fine hard-court form this season, overmatching his Spanish counterpart Marcel Granollers 6-1, 6-2 in just over one hour. The No. 6 seed started the year with nine straight wins, highlighted by a semi-final appearance at the Australian Open and a title at the ATP World Tour 250 event in Auckland. He also defended his title at the ATP World Tour 500 clay court event at Acapulco in February. The win over Granollers advances Ferrer one round further than his result here last year, when he went down to Rafael Nadal, then the world No. 4, in the round of 16.
