Let's talk about Filippo Volandri.

I spoke about him first with the physiotherapist of the tournament (that is the same of my team) and he told me that Volandri has a kneecap problem : I asked if this was the reason of Genova retirement and he confirmed. The tennis club president told me that in Genova was an economical reason and not a physical one. In the previous days there have been some issues between the organization and Volandri: he did not want to sleep in the hotel with the other players, he wanted a more luxurious as he was with his girlfriend so he obtained one of the most elegant hotel in Todi. At 11:30 pm he called the tennis club president saying that the suite in the hotel was not ok for his girlfriend (he said that the bed was too hard): the next day he was transferred to the very best hotel in the region. This is to say that there is not too much feeling between the organization and Volandri. Today he had lunch at my wife’s restaurant (near to the tennis club) and when another player asked him if he would have trained he answered "Not, if I keep eating so much!" Then he trained for an hour.

Roger Federer called out players who engage in match fixing, saying they harm the integrity of the game.

Federer, who swept into the fourth round of the Australian Open with a straight-sets win over Xavier Malisse, learned in his post-match news conference Friday that the Tennis Integrity Unit is investigating a possible fixing case after a match last year between Teymuraz Gabashvili of Russia and Filippo Volandri of Italy in St. Petersburg, Russia was deemed suspicious.

"I do not know whether to get more angry or more disappointed," said Federer, whose influence in the game extends far beyond the court. The Swiss is president of the ATP Players Council.

"I think it's just unacceptable when athletes or players try to do things like this or play with the integrity of the sport. It is a just a pity to a game that has given us everything. Why would you want to play with that? You're not only taking a chance for yourself but for so many others to harm the sport. That's why it's disappointing to hear those sort of things."

What a surprise:

Filippo Volandri, the Italian who successfully had a three-month drug ban overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport nearly two years ago, is believed to be under investigation by the Tennis Integrity Unit after betting irregularities were reported during a match at last October's St Petersburg Open.

Volandri has been quizzed following his first round demise to Teymuraz Gabashvili that saw the Italian take an early lead only to fall to a 3-6,6-3,6-2 defeat.
