Paul-Henri Mathieu (FRA) d. Gustavo Kuerten (BRA) 6-3 6-4 6-2 at French Open GS (FRA) - Clay, Round of 128 <<
Kuerten is on his farewell tour and the former three times champion is a pale shadow of the player that was once world #1. Just one win from five attempts this year and that against a player ranked in the 300's. Mathieu has lost his last three and has been far from convincing of late but the Frenchman's greater fitness should see him through to round two.

yoobzon@just to correct you....I don't know how do you mean that clay isn's Ivan's surface as he made the semis in Roland Garros few years back and has trained on clay for all of his junior days. Not a surprise here, Ljubicic is in full strenght when Guga is only playing for fun as he visits places of he's greatest triumphs. Good luck to him.

Couldn't help put on a 2-0 set bet on after watching the first. Guga was one of my favourite players back in his hey day. Colourful characters like him make this great game even more entertaining.

Kuerten must be the most likeable personality in the history of tennis. He's getting hammered here and still playing like he was 22 with a smile.

Ljubicic has really only had a couple of 'surprise' losses this year - one to Haase at the AO and the other to a LL in the Zagreb final. The other losses have been to very good players i.e Federer, Davydenko, Roddick, Bercych. The losses to Wawrinka and Santoro he maybe should have won, but he has knocked over some decent players also with victories over Robredo and Ancic. So maybe he's not compeletely out of form? Agree with destroyer that this would purely be a sentimental suprise victory if Guga wins, as basing it on anything else would defy logic. Think i'll sit back and watch this one. My heart says Guga, but i think Ivan will crash the party.

I put some money on our old friend Guga here. Why? It's Guga's farewell and even though he's devastated by the injuries, he still knows how to hit the ball. It's a grand finale of the beautiful career and I'm sure Mr. Kuerten will end it in style. Ivan's completely out of form and even if he weren't, clay is not his preference.

Ivan Ljubicic (CRO) d. Gustavo Kuerten (BRA) 6-1 6-2 at Monte Carlo TMS (MON) - Clay, Round of 56 <<
On his famed farewell tour, Guga Kuerten - who will retire in June - is seeking inspiration from one Jim Courier on his motivations for the matches when he knows he's going to retire. The Brazilian's reply: "It is good to have your freedom and not having to show up for practice. If I am able to find something that gives me the same satisfaction of being on the court, then I will be fine." Guga is really enjoying life and his tennis despite limited results, but is fighting through the pain of a chronic quadricep injury. The one good thing for him here is he is up against Ljubicic - a hard court player who even on that surface is out of form and on the downslide in rankings and career. He recently resorted to a challenger event just to get some winning form and confidence, but was a fairly dismal 44% on clay throughout 2007. His movement is very suspect, he lacks penetration in his groundstrokes, and his ever-reliable serve has been down of late and is definitely not going to shine on a surface as slow as this. Guga lived through all the emotions in his last Brazilian home soil game the other day, but if that is behind him and he goes out there with a 'nothing-to-lose' attitude, bearing in mind he holds a 4-1 h2h (1-0 clay) over the Croatian he could well spring a sentimental surprise at fairly big odds.

Kuerten is twice a winner of this tournament and the Brazilian who won three French Opens is rightly afforded a wildcard as he makes his ATP tour retirement rounds. He actually has a 5-1 hd-hd record against Ljubicic the first of those some twelve years ago when both were teenagers making their way on the ATP circuit. Injury has ravaged Kuerten's career and it is too much to ask for him to do anything other than bow out with the applause of Monte Carlo ringing in his ears but it would nice for him to be competitive for one set. Ljubicic has made the quarter finals here in the past but is certainly better with quicker conditions where he can gain many more cheap points on serve. It is difficult to see beyond a Ljubicic win even on this surface given Kuerten's lack of any quality court time.

Sebastien Grosjean (FRA) d. Gustavo Kuerten (BRA) 6-1 7-5 at Miami TMS (USA) - Hard Court, Round of 96 <<
Kuerten has announced his retirement and is now doing the rounds as part of that swansong. He is rightly afforded a wildcard entry and many have been deprived of seeing one of the great players who had his career marred by injury while still in his prime. Unfortunately he is nowhere near the form that saw him win three french opens five masters shields and the coveted masters cup and sadly he is likely to bow out rather tamely in the majority of matches he plays until he hangs up his racquet. Grosjean has got his season back on track after a few disappointments following the Aussie Open and was a finalist at Sunrise last week. Heavily reliant on his forehand the Frenchman is expected to come out victorious in this one.
