Down from 8 to 12 in the rankings after this week, and since he doesn't play Barca, down to 15 the week after. Could easily drop to 25 quite soon too.

Just a matter of time freddiek, just needs his confidence back (and interest at 100 percent). Nando has had some niggling injuries of late, but hopefully he`s ready to go for the clay swing. Should be back inside the top eight then where he belongs.

He was in such good form this time last year; he reached the finals of Monte Carlo then went all the way in Barcelona. He also beat Djokovic a couple of times last Summer

I would like to see him have another good clay-court season this year

You tell them Nando, I would love to find out who was given that Wild Card. Nando said this person does not like Spain either (main reason why I want to find out). He`s definitely not playing this year, 500 points losing though which is not good.
If this story rumbles on, especially near the event stick with Marca, as Diario AS won`t tell the truth always supporting Barcelona. But im everything Madrid, so sometimes Marca could not be right (but I always believe they are :)

Verdasco upset with Barcelona Open officials

Defending champion Fernando Verdasco is upset with Barcelona Open officials for failing to hold a wild card for him. Officials countered that the world No. 8 had plenty of time to directly enter the main draw. The Spaniard will instead play in Estoril, Portugal.

"The reason I’m not going Barcelona -- ask the tournament officials who decide who they want to play," Verdasco said. "Nadal is coming back and there’s a person whom I’m not going to say who it is, but who has had no interest in me playing. I hate going places, especially in Spain, where they are not interested who plays. In Estoril, they are."

Verdasco is also upset that wildcards were handed out to non-Spaniards and added that the tournament doesn’t appreciate him even though he made a big effort to play it last year after Nadal pulled out.

"I am not vindictive or anything, but sad and disappointed with certain people who are responsible and Albert [Costa] because he has given priority to foreign players like Tsonga Soderling instead of Spanish [players] and I think that is a mistake," he said.
Costa, who is also Spain’s Davis Cup captain, said that Verdasco is still welcome at the event.

Thanks for info @murphy. Did not expect it to be this serious.
That`s worrying for our Davis Cup team in March against Belgium.
I can see Rafael really pushing Costa now for Marc Lopez to play the doubles match with Feli. But I imagine Granollers will be selected for doubles duty.

Verdasco played with a broken bone in his foot in his match against Berdych - he may require surgery.

I certainly think he's being optimistic regarding top 5.
