What a shame...

Sweden's former world number four Robin Soderling on Thursday ruled himself out of the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tennis event of 2012, as he struggles to conquer mononucleosis.

The 27-year-old has not played since mid-July when he captured the Bastad title, his fourth trophy of the season.

"My recovery has been longer than expected," he wrote on his Twitter account.

"I am feeling better with each day but it will still take some time before I can start practicing in full speed. My goal is to start with practice in January and I hope for a tournament comeback in February but at this stage it is hard to know when and where. I hope my body will allow me to do that."

Soderling, twice a French Open runner-up, is currently ranked at 13 in the world.

The Australian Open gets underway in Melbourne on January 16.

Based on his comments sounds like he won't play the BTF's either, which would create an extra place for one of the challengers no?

Soderling has pulled out of the Stockholm Open, as he is still suffering from mononucleosis. France’s Tennis Magazine also reports that that the world No. 6 has pulled out of the Paris/Bercy Masters. Soderling has not played since he won Bastad in July.

"I’m extremely disappointed and sad right now," he said on Facebook. "Playing in Stockholm is very special for me and it’s a title I still miss and dream about. I made an attempt to train, but my body just could not do it. I felt worse after practice and so had to make a tough decision to not play in Stockholm. I have to think long term and plan to play tennis for years to come. I believe the best days are in front of me. I will do everything I can to get through this difficult time and come back stronger and more motivated than ever."

Robin Soderling will risk Sweden's further progress this season in the Davis Cup by passing up the July quarter-finals with champion Serbia in order to take some much-needed rest and let a foot injury fully heal.

The decision by the No. 5 surely dooms the Scandinavians in their tie with the inspired Serbs led by Novak Djokovic.

Soderling, who stalled at the quarter-finals of the French Open after playing in the proceeding two finals against Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, has decided to rest despite what may or may not occur on court in the southern Swedish town of Halmstad.

"This time I've decided not to play Davis Cup."
"The intense game schedule on the tour, my sore foot and the overall physical and mental effort, is making it impossible for me to play this time."

Brutal schedule for Soderling: Barcelona next week, then estoril, then madrid, then rome, then dusseldorf, then roland Garros. No weeks off.

Guess he wants number4 back. If he goes deep in Barca surely Estoril must go.

Dusseldorf maybe isn't a bad idea now though, it's quite quick and good practice for Roland Garros, without being too demanding cos it's a team event.

Sweden has received a wild card for the 34th edition of the Power Horse World Team Cup, to be played at the Rochusclub in Dusseldorf from 15-21 May. World No. 5 Robin Soderling will lead the Swedish team.

“We are very pleased about the acceptance of the Swedish team," said Tournament Director Dietloff von Arnim. "Robin Soderling is a top player and a very welcome guest at the Dusseldorf Rochusclub, who enthralled the tennis fans not only during Sweden’s victory in 2008."

Soderling will join Christian Lindell and doubles specialists Robert Lindstedt and Simon Aspelin in Sweden's quest to win a fifth title. "I have always played well in Dusseldorf and have great memories of this tournament,", said Soderling. "I decided to nominated Christian Lindell as the second singles player. He is a promising talent and has performed really well on clay in the past few months."

Soderling has an impressive record in his three appearances at the ATP World Team Championship. In 2008, when Sweden won the title, he was victorious in all his eight matches (four singles, four doubles), a feat previously only achieved by John McEnroe in 1984. Soderling has not lost a singles rubber since the last round robin match in 2007. His overall record at the Rochusclub is 14-4 wins (9-1 singles).

Germany will compete with the current Davis Cup team, including Philipp Kohlschreiber, Florian Mayer, Philipp Petzschner and Christopher Kas. The other nations participating at the 2011 Power Horse World Team Cup include title-holder Argentina, the United States, Serbia, Spain, Russia and Kazakhstan.
