Take care with Ferrero - his knee injury (for which he had surgery and was off the tour for eight months) is so bad, he is contemplating retirement at the end of the year.

Ferrero: "The situation is quite tough. I think it's difficult to accept it but if the pain continues throughout the year, I suppose that in Valencia (November) I will announce my retirement."

former World No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero battled back from a 3-1 deficit in the third set to defeat Italian qualifier Simone Vagnozzi 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-4 in two hours and 43 minutes. Ferrero and Almagro clashed in the Barcelona quarter-finals five years ago, with Almagro prevailing in straight sets. They have split their career meetings 2-2.

The 31-year-old Ferrero is playing his first tournament since the 2010 US Open after undergoing right wrist and left knee surgery on 4 October. The Villena resident has enjoyed much success in Barcelona in previous visits, winning the title in 2001 (d. Moya) and reaching the final in 2000 (l. to Safin) and 2005 (l. to Nadal).

Playing his first tournament since the US Open, former World No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero Wednesday joined countryman David Ferrer in the third round of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, an ATP World Tour 500 tennis event.

Ferrero broke serve four times Wednesday in a 6-4, 7-5 win over Mischa Zverev, the German lucky loser who came into the main draw to replace second seed Andy Murray. After being off the ATP World Tour for 6 1/2 months due to wrist and knee injuries, Ferrero made a winning return to action on Tuesday with a 6-4, 6-2 first-round win over Xavier Malisse.

For a place in the quarter-finals Ferrero will play World No. 186 Simone Vagnozzi, who upset Argentine Juan Monaco 6-3, 6-2 after winning 14 of 17 points on his second serve. The Italian qualifier had not made a main draw appearance in 2011 before this week.

Juan Carlos Ferrero has returned to the tennis circuit at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell with a straight set victory (6-4, 6-2) against Xavier Malisse. The Spaniard admitted after the match that he “felt better than he expected, actually like a real tennis player again” during his combeback. Ferrero played his last match at the US Open last year. Ten years after claiming the Trofeo Conde de Godó title, Ferrero came to Barcelona with the goal to “finish the match without injuries, as it is still early in the day to set higher objectives. For now, staying injury-free is the most important thing”. “I have to gain back my confidence. It’s not that I have to start from zero, but I never suffered from such a severe injury. I want to keep competing on the highest level for at least two or three more years”, said Ferrero at the press conference. The Spaniard is facing now facing Michael Zverev, who replaced injured Andy Murray. Ferrero admitted that he “would have had fewer chances against Andy. He is playing on a very high level. Now it looks better for me against Zverev”.

Former World No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero made a winning return to action on Tuesday at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell as he defeated Belgian Xavier Malisse 6-4, 6-2 to reach the second round of the ATP World Tour 500 clay-court tennis tournament.

The Spaniard was playing his first match since a third-round exit (l. to Melzer) at the US Open last September, having undergone right wrist and left knee surgery on 4 October. In avenging the five-set defeat he suffered to Malisse in the first round at Wimbledon last year, Ferrero converted four of nine break points to prevail in 81 minutes.

The 31-year-old Ferrero, who has fallen to No. 77 in the South African Airways 2011 ATP Rankings, won the Barcelona title in 2001 (d. Moya) and reached the final in 2000 (l. to Safin) and 2005 (l. to Nadal). He will next face German lucky loser Mischa Zverev, who replaced the injured (elbow) Andy Murray in the main draw.
