Old Stager Pavel has not had the best of starts to the year and is yet to register a victory in 2008, nevertheless the Romanian has taken sets off Tsonga in the Davis Cup and Andreev at the Aussie Open. He still has a more than useful serve and can hold his own from the back of the court. It is movement that lets him down and Benneteau will try to move him about as much as he can. The Frenchman performed well in last weeks challenger in Bergamo going down to Seppi in the final which went the distance. A winner over Ferrer pre-Aussie Open, Benneteau looks to be in decent form and providing he can handle the Pavel serve looks the most likely to progress.

Old war horse Pavel has proved over the last year he can still compete with some of the higher ranked players on tour, victories over Ljubicic and Stepanek prove that he also took sets off Baghdatis and Tursunov. The Romanian veteran has a decent serve and is reasonable off the ground but his movement is not the best. Andreev has a big serve and very powerful forehand, the Russian likes to dictate matters from his forehand side and is pretty safe from the baseline. Both players are arguably better on clay. Andreev won the only meeting between the pair and if he can move Pavel around sufficiently here has the better chance of making round 2

I like this match a lot. Two "old" guys facing each other for the sixth time and so far Pavel leads 5 0 ( the other two matches were in davis cup and a chalenger). Although everyone keeps asking the roumanian about retirement he keeps playing at the highest level because he enjoys it (just like Santoro I might add). The german, with a title , a final and another semifinal here in his period of glory, seems closer to the end of his career than his opponent...I think Pavel should take this in straight sets.
