| | I had a small sentimental punt on Karanusic for this title at 100-1 and although I don't believe it will prove fruitful my chances were definitely lifted by Ljubicic's withdrawal yesterday which earnt his compatriot a day off. All that whilst Gonzalez was busy coping with the thunderbolts from Karlovic - and he inflicted the crowd fav's 3rd consecutive defeat after leading by one set to love. The Argentine was an extremely successful challenger player (one 4 titles in succession around this time last year) and plays very much the typical claycourt game relying heavily on defensive groundstroke consistency and brilliant movement around the court. Karanusic, who trails the h2h 2-0 both on clay including a thrilling 5-setter at the French earlier this year, is a more attacking style of player but is well known (as you Croatian fans can attest) for having days of high unforced errors and some indifferent decision making. But the Croatian has a fairly good clay court record also, and has won 7 of his past 10 inside Croatian territory suggesting he doesn't mind playing up to the home crowd. If thier match at Roland Garros is anything to go by, expect a lot of breaks here and Roko actually had more chances in that match (8 of 25 vs 10 of 22 for Gonzo), he also produced more aces, less double faults and won very similar numbers behind his serve. With the different circumstances here and the extra rest, I think Karanusic can gain some revenge on Maximo but it's hard to be confident. |
