Injured del Potro pulls out of Paris Masters

PARIS (AP)—Juan Martin Del Potro has withdrawn from the Paris Masters because of a shoulder injury.

The tournament starts Monday and the Argentine’s withdrawal ends his chances of qualifying for the ATP World Tour Finals.

Del Potro says, “My shoulder started bothering me in Valencia and it got worse after each round.” The 2009 U.S. Open champion lost to eventual champion Marcel Granollers of Spain in the semifinals of the Valencia Open on Saturday.

Rafael Nadal withdrew from the Paris Masters on Thursday

Argentina will face Spain in the Dec. 2-4 Davis Cup final in Sevilla, where Del Potro and Nadal are both expected to lead their respective countries.

Juan Martín won't go to Paris, he has pain on his shoulder and doesn't want to risk the Davis Cup final in Spain.

High praise indeed from Pete Sampras for Del Potro.
He says he reminds him of the great Roger Federer:

"I am a big proponent of his game. He has a murder serve and I like the fact he hits a pretty flat ball. That's not easy for a guy of his height. I also like his big attitude. He's not afraid of winning or saying he wants to be right there with Nadal and Djokovic and Federer. And part of his attitude is that he's willing to take chances. In that way he's a little like Federer. Federer will go for big shots and he's willing to miss, but the makes can be incredible. Del Po is the same way."

VALUE ON DEL POTRO OVER 10 FOR US OPEN

It has taken Nadal and Djokovic to take Juan Martin out of the past two slams and none of those matches were easy. Now we head to the US hard court season, where Juan Martin made his first mark in 2008. Juan Martin has always out performed expectations in the summer period when heathy and I expect that he will do it again this year. I think that all concerns of injury have been put to rest now that he is playing Davis Cup this week. Players like Del Potro won't play Davis Cup unless they are 100% fit. Personally, I think that Juan Martin is faster and a better defender this year. At this point I see him as having three tough matches for a US Open victory and I would not rate him a heavy underdog against anyone except Djokovic on hard court. My recommendation is back him heavy to win over 10 and cash some out before the draw comes out. My guess is that he settles below 8 before the Open.

Del Potro playing the French after all.

From AAP: Former US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro says he has recovered from a hip injury and will play at the French Open.
The Argentine world No.27 was forced to pull out of a third-round match against Rafael Nadal at this month's Madrid Open because of the injury.
Del Potro, the 2009 US Open champion, sent a message to his Twitter account saying his recovery was down to hard work.
"See you in Paris," he tweeted.
Del Potro's best performance at the French Open was a semi-finals appearance in 2009.

Better news on Del Potro...

Former US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro says he hopes to be fit for the French Open despite struggling with a hip injury.
The 22-year-old Del Potro has a muscle tear, which caused him to withdraw before a match against Rafael Nadal at the Madrid Open last week.
The Argentine player says the injury is ``not too serious'' and he still has the "dream" of playing in Paris when the tournament starts on May 22.

Bad news on Del Potro - he's in extreme doubt for the French...

He has suffered an eight-millimeter tear in his left rectus muscle.
Del Potro picked up the injury in Madrid.
The left rectus muscle is part of the quadriceps and is close to the hip.

By not playing this week, DelPot actually goes up the rankings next Monday - to 24 or 25 perhaps.
