| | Ruben was always a very interesting player for me to watch as he entered main draws and defeated many considered clay court specialists. At the 2006 French Open, Ramirez Hidalgo reached the 4th round in a Grand Slam event for the first time in his career. Before the tournament, he lost four consecutive times in the first round of a Grand Slam. At the 2008 Monte Carlo Masters, Hidalgo almost defeated World No.1 Roger Federer. Hidalgo lost the first set 6-1, but won the second when Federer lost his serve and won it 6-3 and in the final deciding set he was leading 1-5 up and 30-15 but lost his serve and eventually the set and match. The final score was 6-1, 3-6, 7-6. Shame though, he was so close and he probably said to himself he will retire if he beats Fed because then he is too good :P hehe Oh well, i am 99% sure he will avenge that loss to Gianluca Naso in Genova last year... |

| | Naso has earned two solid victories firstly over third seed Becker who was probably the most dangerous player in the draw at the start of the week, then a narrow come-from-behind win over capable local Armando who always seems to lift for this event in qualifying. The Italian has been known to be a choker, but the two wins would defy that theory at least this week. He does however face a tough task against a guy with better hardcourt credentials in Robbie Smeets who grew up on the terrain. The Aussie accounted for shotmaker Ledovskikh then backed it up with a comeback win over Middlekoop from the Netherlands who had recently beaten Haase, Becker, Beck and taken both Troicki and Verkerk to 3 sets. Smeetsy is a clever player on the court using nice angles and rarely making unforced errors, he is a good decision maker and has a decent-enough serve to feel confident in that area. Naso is more renowned as a dirtballer and isn't exactly going to hit him off the court, and with his serve nothing to rely upon I'd expect the man from down under to get enough opportunities to grind out a win. |
