Another footfault drama at the US Open, two-handed facepalm ;-)

---

Courtesy of AP
September 2, 2010

Roddick's elimination [from the US Open] had drama of a different sort.

Already trailing 5-2 in the third, Roddick wound up in an argument over a foot-fault call on a first serve. He turned to the official and asked, ''What foot?''

When she told him it was his right foot, he replied, ''That's impossible.'' Roddick then turned to chair umpire Enric Molina and, pointing first to his right foot, then his left, asked, ''Has THIS foot gone in front of THAT foot ever in my career?''

Molina replied: ''Not in my matches.''

A TV replay showed Roddick did commit a foot fault - but with his left toes. Asked later what might have happened if the lineswoman said the call was made because his left foot was on the baseline, he replied: ''There would have been no discussion.''

But Roddick had berated the lineswoman - although without the threatening or colorful language that Serena Williams used when she launched a tirade at a line judge over a foot call at the end of her semifinal loss to Clijsters last year.

He missed his second serve for a double-fault, then continued to harangue the official, at one point jokingly making a reference to ''1-800-Rent-a-Ref.''

''In hindsight, did I let it go too far?'' Roddick said. ''Probably.''

 Victoria Azarenka (BLR)

A roundup of Azarenka's on-court collapse at the US Open:

---

Courtesy of AP
September 2, 2010

The No. 10 seed was trailing Gisela Dulko 1-4 in their second-round match when she crumbled to the court after clutching her side. Doctors quickly attended to Azarenka, placing towels on her legs, giving her water and applying ice packs to her body. Dulko ran over to Azarenka's aid and appeared shaken as her opponent lay on the ground. A few minutes after the collapse, Azarenka was taken off the court in a wheelchair. She was taken to the hospital and diagnosed with a mild concussion. Azarenka later said she had fallen during a pre-match training session and that her condition worsened throughout the match. She was released from the hospital and was resting Wednesday night in her hotel.

The 11th-ranked Belarusian had been a popular pick to make a deep run at Flushing Meadows. Her powerful backhand is one of the best in the game and the draw seemed to set up favorably for her.

Following her release, Azarenka released a statement about her collapse: I was warming up in the gym prior to my match against Gisela Dulko when I fell while running a sprint. I fell forward and hit my arm and head. I was checked by the medial team before I went on court, and they were courtside for monitoring. I felt worse as the match went on, having a headache and feeling dizzy. I also started having trouble seeing and felt weak before I fell. I was taken to the hospital for some medical tests and have been diagnosed with a mild concussion."

Fernando Gonzalez has retired down 6-7 (2), 6-1, 1-0 against Ivan Dodig in the first round of the U.S. Open with a knee injury. Gonzalez has struggled with knee problems all year and was playing his second event after being sidelined since Wimbledon.

He is expected to drop out of the Top 40 after this event, having reached the quarterfinals last year.

2010 US OPEN: GULBIS STILL NEEDS TO PROVE A FEW THINGS THIS WEEK

We have all been keeping an eye on the Latvian loose cannon since his quarter final appearance at the French Open in 2008. I backed him going into the 2008 US Open and watched him school Roddick in the first set at Arthur Ash stadium before the experience of Roddick prevailed. No one in the stands had heard of him, but they all took notice. Unfortunately, 2009 was more or less a missing season. This year he has shown some promise by winning his first ATP tournament, beating Roger and playing one of the most competitive matches against Rafa on clay this year. He fizzled out at the French Open and hasn’t really accomplished much since. One thing that has been consistent is that his game remains beyond the control of his opponents and in most cases himself. I backed Juan Martin going into the US open last year and I have a small amount backing Gulbis here, which I may add to this week. In particular, if he can overcome the phenomenal return and baseline game of Nalbandian, then he will have my support for the rest of the open. There is no one on tour who will feel fortunate to face this kid if he is playing his best even if it is in the final. Although Del Potro was a far more developed player last year than Gulbis is this year, the similarities must not be if ignored.

Brad Gilbert says Nadal needs to improve his ROS if he wants to stand a genuine chance to win the USO.

I would even say his ROS is the biggest concern in his HC game, more so than his serve, backhand and defensive tendencies.

The conditions in New York do not suit Nadal's game and he admitted: "The ball is softer, I don't get the top spin I play with but I am playing better and better in this tournament.

"On the centre court (Arthur Ashe Stadium) there is always a lot of wind and sometimes against the wind it feels like you are not moving the ball.

"But when you are in the semi-finals the last two years, why not? I won in Australia too and I always thought it would be easier to play well here than Wimbledon."

 Andy Murray (GBR)

Britain's Andy Murray says he is fit and raring to go as he targets a maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open in New York which gets under way on Monday.

Murray struggled in the heat in his last tournament in Cincinnati, losing to American Mardy Fish in the quarter-finals in a third-set tie-break.

But the world number four says he has suffered no long-term damage.

"I feel fine. I had a couple of days off after Cincinnati and then started training again on Monday," said Murray.

Murray, who plays Lukas Lacko of Slovakia in the first round at Flushing Meadows, was a losing finalist in 2008.

He enters the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year in good form having defended his Masters title in Toronto earlier this month, beating Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in consecutive matches.

"It definitely helped, it was good for the confidence," said the 23-year-old Scot.

"I always enjoying playing here, New York is obviously a fun city to come to. I've been here a week now and I feel good."

 Lleyton Hewitt (AUS)

Lleyton Hewitt has split with his coach of one year, adding Nathan Healey to a laundry list of one-time mentors to Australian who won the US Open nine years ago.

Bermuda-based Hewitt and "Heals" lasted for 12 months, with the player going into the US Open on his own. Hewitt's handlers said the split was amicable, with the coach calling it all off to spend more time with his young family in Australia.

The Hewitt camp said that nothing is likely to be decided before the start of 2011 season. Hewitt has also parted company over the years with Darren Cahill in 2001 and Jason Stoltenberg in 2003. He was also guided by Tony Roche, who also was not able to travel full-time.

Roger Rasheed coached the then-young gun who once ruled the ATP for four years, with an unpleasant split in January 2007 prior to the Australian Open.

Hewitt starts the Open on Monday as 32nd seed with a first-round match against Paul-Henri Mathieu

Even though Murray has an excellent chance of winning his first major on his best surface, I don`t see him winning the Open this year and I would want @ 7.0 if backing him. His form is solid coming into the US Open no-doubt, but Federer got his number in Majors as when Fedex ups his game, the match his simply played on his terms and Murray can`t match him from the baseline as proven. Also, as we know the US Open is one of the fatest surfaces around, and given Murray is a "counter-punch" player, he will always need to serve @ 60% to as their is always a Berdych/Soderling or in last years case a Cilic playing "lights out tennis" and blitzing him off the court.
I see Murray in exactly the same postion as Wozniacki for a lot of reasons, but not going him to them just now as would take to long :). Anyway, can`t wait forthe US Open to begin... Night matches are amazing in New York.

Might pay to take care if you arev looking to be on Murray in the outright market.
This line is from a player's blog: "Murray received treatment for a sore foot early this morning behind closed doors, said would not bet my money on him as the final winner."

Not sure how much to read into that but apparently Murray may also have had long-term problems with his ankle(s), as well as his knee.

Blake frustrated by lack of consistency

A day after winning the shortest match on tour [vs. Riba] this season, James Blake has fallen 6-4, 6-2 to Alex Dogopolov in Blake's hometown event at New Haven.

"I don't have the same confidence that I know I'm going to play at a certain level every day," said Blake, who has fallen out of the top 100 after struggling with knee problems this season. "When I play well, I can play consistently at a high level but now I play well in spurts.

Blake, who has alternately discussed and dismissed retirement this year, remains uncertain about his future. "Hopefully, I've got more left in me," he said. "I feel like I do.

"I'm going to put in the hard work. It's just a question of whether I'm able or not to do it and I still have it physically."

For those of you wondering why Marcos lost the 1st vs Chela yesterday, here's an explanation:

---

Courtesy of AP
August 26, 2010

In the men's draw, top seed Marcos Baghdatis needed three sets to beat Juan Ignacio Chela and earn a quarterfinal berth.

Chela took the first set 6-1, before Baghdatis came back to win the next two 6-3, 6-2.

Baghdatis said he didn't get much sleep Tuesday night and had a bad morning, getting up earlier than he needed to, because he thought he had an earlier match.

''I was a bit tired, so I started the match like I started my day, basically,'' he said. ''But then, I found a solution to win. I fought the match. I stopped crying.''

 Mardy Fish (USA)

Some comments made by Mardy after his final loss at Cincinnati:

---

Courtesy of ATP
August 24, 2010

Mardy Fish may have lost out to Roger Federer in the Cincinnati final on Sunday, but the American is delighted with his form after an outstanding Olympus US Open Series and will rise to from No. 36 to No. 21 in the updated South African Airways 2010 ATP Rankings on Monday.

After shedding 30 lbs in weight in the past 10 months, Fish has enjoyed a career resurgence, finishing runner-up to Sam Querrey at The Queen’s Club in June before winning back-to-back titles in Newport (d. O. Rochus) and Atlanta (d. Isner).

“I feel great. I've done some things that I've never done before,” said Fish. “I'll be able to put this match in perspective very shortly. It's a great tournament. It's as well as I've played. I played well today; he played well today. It was a pretty high level, I thought, for the most part.”

The 28-year-old Fish suffered the disappointment of losing in the Cincinnati final for a second time, having held two match points in a heartbreaking defeat to Andy Roddick in 2003. Fish avenged that loss to Roddick as he came from a set and a break down to defeat his childhood friend in the semi-finals on Saturday and reach his fourth ATP World Tour final of the summer.

“I've played three Masters 1000 finals (also Indian Wells 2008) and lost in three sets in every one. I desperately want to sort of have my career maybe be remembered by a big tournament or something like that. I've finished second in a lot of big tournaments: the Olympics and here a couple times and Indian Wells I've played really well. So I've wanted badly to win a real big one. This would have been perfect, but wasn't meant to be.”

 Juan Martin Del Potro (ARG)

Defending champion Juan Martin del Potro has been forced to pull out of the US Open because of a persistent wrist injury.

The Argentine, 21, has not played since the Australian Open in January after suffering the injury and had surgery on it in May to try and cure the problem.

"I'm so sorry for my fans, sponsors and the people who care about me," he said.

"But I have only started practising in the last two weeks and unfortunately I cannot compete at the top level yet."

The news is a second major setback in 24 hours for tournament organisers, following the announcement on Friday that women's world number one Serena Williams will also miss the tournament because of a foot injury.

Reigning women's champion Kim Clijsters also suffered an injury scare this week but insists she will be fit to defend her title at Flushing Meadow, starting at the end of the month.

"It is unfortunate that Juan Martin has not recovered from wrist surgery in time to defend his US Open title," said US Open tournament director Jim Curley.

"We wish him all the best and look forward to his return to New York next year."

Del Potro became the first man other than Rafael Nadal to beat Roger Federer in the final of a Grand Slam tournament at the US Open last September, but began struggling with tendinitis in his right wrist the following month.

He then suffered a recurrence of the injury in the new year and continued to struggle with the problem at the Australian Open, losing in the fourth round to Marin Cilic.

Bad news for Ivanovic, she's pulled out of New Haven (replaced by Petrova).
Her ankle injury isn't improving as quickly as she'd like.

"Right now I am quite down, but I believe I will be ready for the U.S. Open."

Austrian Koellerer punished for breaking rules on betting

Austrian player Daniel Koellerer was given a suspended three-month ban after admitting using his personal website to facilitate betting on matches, the Tennis Integrity Unit said on Thursday.

The 27-year-old, ranked 134th in the world, was also handed a suspended 15,000 euros ($19,250) fine which, like the ban, would be triggered if he committed a similar offence in the next two years. His manager Manfred Nareyka was also disciplined.

Koellerer's website included a link to a gambling site that enabled fans to place bets on matches.

The Tennis Integrity Unit was established by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and the ATP and WTA Tours to protect the sport from corruption and betting scandals.

"Tennis Integrity Unit investigation found that Mr. Koellerer's personal website carried details of betting odds on tennis matches and provided links to allow users to place bets," a statement said.

"The offence of facilitating betting contravenes Article D1b of the Uniform Tennis Anti-Corruption Program."

All players must sign up to the Uniform Tennis Anti-Corruption Program.

Earlier this year, Russian player Ekaterina Bychkova was suspended for 30 days and missed the Australian Open after the Tennis Integrity Unit found that she failed to report that she was asked to provide inside information and throw matches.

There was no suggestion that she had been involved in fixing matches.

James Blake says he will do his best to play his hometown event in New Haven next week after a lackluster 6-3, 6-0 loss to Denis Istomin in Cincinnati, but will take a break after the U.S. Open to rest and recover from injuries.

"I know what would be best for me is to have a real rest and get my body healthy," said Blake. "But I really want to play New Haven and I really want to play at the U.S. Open, so I know we're gonna be kind of playing beat the clock and see if I can be as healthy as possible going in there.

"If I'm at the point where I'm at today and not feeling any better than I did today, then I don't know if I'll be able to. But I really think with a couple days off I'll be able to be a lot better. The hometown crowds there will hopefully lift my spirits a lot, and I'll have a whole a lot to play for."

Murray says Roger Federer isn't quite what he used to be - that should spice their matches up even further.

Murray: "He's always very tough to beat. It's just that, because of how good he was in every tournament three or four years ago – and it's very difficult to be that consistent throughout your whole career ... it's normal that he's lost a little bit the last few years. But he's still been playing very, very well in grand slams. I'm sure that's what his goals are for the year, to make sure he plays his best there."

Del Potro recovery from wrist surgery on track

Juan Martin del Potro's wrist is holding up well after surgery earlier this year, says his trainer.

"Juan Martin is without pain and everything's he's done up to this moment is without pain," Diego Rivas told Clarin.

Del Potro has travelled to Miami to practice because of the cold in Buenos Aires, he added, and increased the "volume and intensity" of his training program.

The Argentine is not expected to defend his title at the U.S. Open in a few weeks' time.

Carsten Ball gets US Open wildcard August 18, 2010 - 2:39PM

Big-serving Carsten Ball will join fellow Australians Lleyton Hewitt and Peter Luczak in the upcoming US Open after being awarded the discretionary wildcard.

Ball achieved a career-high ranking of 108 last month after winning an ATP Challenger title in Lexington.

"I have been looking forward to the US Open since last year when I played Novak Djokovic in the second round," said Ball.

"I know I lost the match but it was a great learning experience and something that I think has helped me develop as a player.

"So I am really keen to test my game against the best players in the world in grand slam conditions."

Hewitt and Luczak are the only Australian men ranked high enough to gain direct entry into the final major of the year.

Tennis Australia and the US Tennis Association have a reciprocal arrangement offering one men's and one women's wildcards to their respective grand slam events each year.

The women's wildcard will be announced on Thursday morning, with in-form Jelena Dokic and Sophie Ferguson both in the running.

The other men to receive wildcards on Wednesday (AEST) included former top-five player James Blake, fellow Americans Bradley Klahn, Jack Sock, Ryan Sweeting and Donald Young and Frenchman Guillaume Rufin.

Nalbandian on Washington & Toronto....

When I approached the US [hardcourt] swing, I did so with the objective of gaining more hours on the court and to see how my body would respond to the demands of the circuit and now I'm more than satisfied with the outcome.
I played very well these two weeks, I beat some great players and the response from my body was perfect. Against Murray, I felt a little tired but that's logical after having played all those matches.
If I play well and win, the ranking will take care of itself. The important thing is to feel confident on court.

I'm very happy and satisfied with my performance during those last two weeks, both in Washington and in Toronto. I think that I was able to play at a very high level.
In the end, I felt very tired, having played 11 consecutive matches [well, 10 actually] but the balance is a very positive one.

 Andy Murray (GBR)

A few comments by Darren Cahill on Andy's Toronto win as well as a few remarks on the rest of the top4 and USO prosects:

---

He liked what he saw last week from Rogers Cup winner Andy Murray. “I’ve been an Andy fan for a long time,” said Cahill. “He’s evolved as a person and the way he handled his emotions and not having a coach there is part of that growing-up process. He’s learning to deal with situations. I thought it was interesting that he said he wants his next coach to teach me to be more aggressive.”

I told Cahill that remark confounded me a bit. Haven’t all his coaches tried to tell him that? “We can all be a little stubborn,” said Cahill. “When you have a style that had a 6-2 edge on Federer, you wonder why everyone is telling you to change.”

Cahill on Novak Djokovic: “He’s the one at the top who can improve the most. He’s had good results, but he’s not played like a top-10 all year. The next two or three years are key for him, but I don’t know what medical issues he’s struggling with. When he is, his game sinks.”

On Federer: “I think he’s got a lot to look forward to. He can play various styles. But, as Andre said, the older you get the more you have to be looking after the body.”

His U.S. Open favorites: “I don’t see anyone winning outside of the top three — and by top three I mean Nadal, Murray and Federer. I put Djokovic in the next group.”

 Andy Murray (GBR)

From tennisworld.typepad.com

---

Flying coach-less

Andy Murray may never win a major. If he doesn’t, there’s a very good chance he’ll go down as the best player not to do so. His game has its flaws and its holes—the biggest one being that he can’t close his eyes and belt his way out of trouble—and he’ll always have the big British monkey on his back. Beyond that, his at times tetchy demeanor doesn’t make him an easy player to love; his fan base presumably consists of students of the game and diehard lovers of all things pale and Anglo. But this past week in Toronto, Murray showed that for the span of six days, he can play circles around the world’s best, steal their games out of their back pockets, and leave them spinning in confusion.

In the quarters, Murray put David Nalbandian exactly where he didn’t want to be. In the semis, he gave Rafael Nadal, not normally known for indecisiveness, no good options and left the world’s best player temporarily unsure of what he does best. In the final, Murray did a little of what he usually does, by punching holes in Roger Federer’s net attack, and a little of what he usually doesn’t, by striking first and piling up more winners than his opponent.

“He was aggressive,” Federer said of Murray. “He was taking the ball early. He wasn’t giving me much, and he clutch-served at the very end when he had to, and he deserved the victory.”

Murray came in with four things going for him. He had the momentum, after his win over Nadal. He had the hunger, after what has thus far been a disappointing season. He had less outside pressure, with no coach’s tactical advice ringing in his ears. And he was rested. Federer was coming off two straight three-set night matches, while Murray had finished his semifinal the previous afternoon. All of that added up to a hot start: Murray broke Federer twice to open the match, winning 12 of the first 16 points.

Big early leads can throw you off. You’re suddenly out in front by yourself, with nobody running neck and neck with you anymore—think about sprinters and the pace-setting “rabbits” they hide themselves behind. Murray double-faulted to start the fourth game, and within a few minutes he couldn’t get the ball over the net. It didn’t take long for both of his breaks to evaporate. Partially this was Murray coming down to earth, but it was also due to how difficult it still is to finish Roger Federer.

Serving for it at 5-4, Murray slid a nice first ball out wide into the deuce court. It looked for a split-second to be unreturnable. It was, by virtually anyone but Federer. But he was able, as he so often is, to get the barest edge of his frame on it, just enough to get it to creep over the net and land in a tricky position for his opponent. Murray wristed it inside out, but Federer was there to time a perfect backhand pass. Frustration in his face for the first time, Murray double faulted to be broken a few minutes later. The early upbeat aggressiveness was gone; the doomed hangdog look had returned. There’s been talk at various times over the years about how Federer has lost his invincible aura, that the “locker room” isn’t scared of him anymore. From the evidence this week, it’s obvious that that’s not true, or not true enough to make much of a difference. The thought of beating Federer is still as daunting and exciting and nerve-wracking as ever for these guys.

It all seemed to be going according to Federer’s Toronto blueprint. He had broken Berdych when he served for the match in the quarters, and broken Djokovic to end their semi. But against Murray, after he’d won the first point of his own service game at 5-5, Federer shot himself in the foot. He served and volleyed, and Murray drilled a return that he couldn’t handle. His momentum had been stopped in its tracks, and he was broken. Federer is constantly being told, for lack of any better advice, I suppose, to come to the net more. But that hasn’t been his game for many years. I’m not saying he should never come in or never mix it up. But he had Murray on the run at 5-5; there was no need to change a winning game at that moment, especially against one of the best returners in tennis, and a guy who loves a target. The same thing would happen at 5-5 on Federer’s serve in the second set. He began that game with two trips to the net, and two lost points, and he was eventually broken.

At the start of 2009, Murray was beating Federer with a largely defensive game. That wasn’t the case this time. Like Federer said, he came up with bombs at the end; one of them was the hardest serve Murray has ever hit, a fact that the Scot happily volunteered in his presser (though it still wasn't enough to bring a smile). Murray also got free points serving to Federer’s backhand—Federer looked fooled by the shot on a number of occasions—and he used both of his ground strokes to open up the court. Few men can create so well with their crosscourt backhands.

Afterward, Murray said that he was calmer than normal last week, and that he didn’t miss having a coach because he’d been working with one so recently; it wasn’t like he had no ideas or tactics to fall back on. But like I said after his semi, Murray has a stubborn streak, one that naturally counters authority. As with many of the pros, we’ve watched him go through various stages in his maturing process. He tried a celebrity, LTA-payrolled coach in Brad Gilbert before dumping him. Then he tried to take some control of his destiny by surrounding himself with a committee of coaches—Miles McLagan, Alex Corretja, and the various trainers and pals who play video games with him all over the world. What’s the next step? Murray says he’ll start looking for a coach after the U.S. Open, but in Toronto he may have found out a little more about what he’s capable of when he trusts himself. Because Murray can do a lot of things, but not one obvious thing, he doesn’t have an easy game to use. Last week, on his own, he used it better than he ever has when he was listening to someone else.

This win doesn’t mean Murray is the favorite for the US. Open, or even that he’s “back,” as we like to say. Every week is its own week on the tour, worthy of appreciation in its own right. So I’ll appreciate one particular shot that Murray came up with in the final. Federer hit a drop volley and closed in on the net. It didn’t look like Murray could possibly reach the ball, but he did. More than just reaching it, though, he slid his racquet under the ball, lifted it over Federer’s head, and brought it down inside the baseline, at a virtually impossible angle. You could almost see Murray, as he swung, decide to do something creative and trust his hands and his talent to pull it off. It was a unique, brilliant, artistic, unnecessary shot, one that almost no one else on earth could have made. And there’s not a coach on earth who could have told him to make it.

Sam Stosur has returned to the training track after taking 10 days off to get over an arm injury that has been troubling the world No.5 for the past 12 months.
After a series of doctors appointments and an MRI, Stosur took doctors’ advice and shelved her racquets.

“I’m taking a few weeks off from playing and practice but working hard on my fitness, strength and agility. If all goes well I should be playing in New Haven and then the US Open, fingers crossed,” she told samstosur.com.

Stosur is planning to return to the practice court with coach Dave Taylor in the coming week, but will continue off-court work until then.

Stosur has been one of the busiest players on the WTA tour this year, playing 50 matches for a 38-12 win-loss record. The hard work has yielded a title in Charleston, finals at the French Open and Stuttgart and semifinal showings at Stanford, Eastbourne and Indian Wells.

The 26-year-old Queenslander was granted a wildcard into New Haven last week, which she will use as a tune-up for the final Grand Slam tournament of the year, the US Open.

Not looking good for Venus for the USO:

World No.4 Venus Williams has withdrawn from next week's $US2 million ($A2.23 million) WTA event in Montreal due to a nagging left knee injury that has frustrated her US Open preparations.
The US veteran also withdrew from this week's event in Cincinnati, meaning she will join her sister Serena in missing the two top tune-up events for the year's final grand slam tournament that begins on August 30 in New York.
``The pain that I am experiencing in my knee has unfortunately not gone away,'' Williams said in a statement issued by tournament officials.
Venus Williams would have played in Montreal for the first time.
Instead, the seven-time grand slam champion has not played a top-level singles match since she was ousted from the Wimbledon quarter-finals by 82nd-ranked Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria on June 29.
The only remaining US Open warm-up event possible for either Williams sister would be at New Haven in the week before the US Open.

 Samantha Stosur (AUS)

News on Sam Stosur:

Samantha Stosur is confident of being fit for the US Open after accepting a wildcard into a lead-up event in New Haven, Connecticut a week earlier.
There were concerns that Australia's world No.5 may have to sit out the final grand slam of the year after an MRI scan last week revealed a "stress reaction" in her right serving arm.
Stosur first complained of arm soreness during her successful - but hectic - claycourt campaign which climaxed with an appearance in the French Open final in June.
The injury flared again during a quarter-final loss to Flavia Pennetta in San Diego last week and forced the 26-year-old to withdraw from the two major Open lead-up events in Cincinnati and Montreal.
But coach David Taylor says Stosur is now recovering well and on track for the Open, which gets underway in New York on August 30.
"The arm wasn't good in San Diego," Taylor told AAP on Friday.
"She was diagnosed with a 'stress reaction in her distal humerus'.
"The doctor recommended 10 days off. So she pulled out of Cincy and Montreal but has taken a wildcard into New Haven the week before the Open.
"She's played more singles matches than anyone on tour (this year) so I guess the body needed a break.
"She won't be playing any doubles for the rest of the year, so hopefully this is just a small bump in the road."

 Ana Ivanovic (SRB)

Ana Ivanovic has turned down the offer of a late wild card from Montreal, saying she was unhappy with the comments made by tournament director Eugene Lapierre following the event's initial refusal to give her a wild card.

"I would have loved to have played in Montreal, but I was quite hurt by the comments of Mr Lapier[r]e that I was shown in The Montreal Gazette recently," she wrote on her official website. “I don’t think his comments were necessary, and they contradicted everything he had told my management previously: that I was not getting a wild card because I am not Canadian."

The tournament, which takes place next week, had earlier decided not to give Ivanovic a wild card because it would have potentially meant refusing one to Quebec's Stephanie Dubios.

But Dubois has maintained her position as the No. 2-ranked Canadian and thus remains in line for a wild card even if one were given to an foreign player. With Serena Williams having pulled out of the event and Venus Williams's participation uncertain, the tournament offered Ivanovic a wild card on Tuesday.

However, Ivanovic has now refused the offer and will not be playing qualifying as previously indicated.

"The fact that my original request was turned down isn’t really an issue," she said. "I would have been happy to play qualifying, but I felt that they kind of stepped over the line with this interview, making public our correspondence and even misrepresenting it. Unfortunately I don’t feel welcome at this tournament."

It seems there may be an explanation for Andy Roddick's recent poor performances.

He says he will undergo some medical tests after feeling drained of energy during his loss against Gilles Simon in Washington.

Roddick: "Something doesn't feel quite right. I haven't been feeling well for some weeks. Maybe it could be a vitamin deficiency. We will have to take a look at that. I feel pretty lethargic and not quite as excitable as I normally am."

While it’s the first time Kamke will get a direct entry into a Grand Slam event, he qualified for the French Open earlier this year and won a round, and he followed that by qualifying at Wimbledon, where he reached the third round.

“I think I’m playing the best tennis of my career,” said Kamke. “I’m getting better every week. I was a little worried because I’ve been playing club tennis in Germany and I was coming from clay to hard courts. But once I played my first match here, I felt more comfortable.”

The latest on Dah-Veeds "protected ranking" situation, and what it means playing Davis Cup in July about "freeze ranking"....

As the ATP rulebook states, the protected ranking ends after either nine months or nine times of using it. With the starting point of those nine months defined by the first "tennis event" a player takes part in after his injury, which includes exhibitions.
In David's case, the first event was the San Juan exhibition, where he played his first match after surgery on December 12, 2009. His protected ranking should therefore expire on September 12, after the US Open. Even though so far, he has only used it for Monte Carlo (and will use it for Toronto, Cincinnati and probably also the US Open).
One of the reasons David hasn't made use of his protected ranking more often is of course that after Monte Carlo, he was out for almost three months. The important word here is 'almost'. Because for players, out for "a minimum of three months", there's the chance to apply for a so-called "freeze" of the protected ranking. But David played against Davydenko two months and three weeks after his last match at Monte Carlo. Therefore, according to the rules, he's not eligible for such a "freeze", i.e. extension of his protected ranking.
This means that once the US Open are over, David will either have to have a much better ranking that allows him to get into main draws, or he will have to rely on receiving wildcards from tournament organisers. Though getting wildcards hasn't been a problem for David, so far. And this is surely not going to change during the indoor swing, traditionally David's best part of the season."

Andy Murray fails to land coach Darren Cahill

Andy Murray's hopes of landing Darren Cahill as his new coach have vanished after the Australian ruled himself out.

Cahill, former coach to Lleyton Hewitt and Andre Agassi, said he wants to concentrate on his work with Adidas and sports channel ESPN.

"Andy's one of the best players on the tour but he's looking for a full-time coach. I can't be that," he said.

Murray has been without a coach since parting company with Miles Maclagan last week.

Maclagan is thought to have left the Scot's employ after disagreements over the involvement of Alex Corretja as a part-time coaching consultant.

Former GB Davis Cup player Maclagan had guided the 23-year-old's career for two-and-a-half years and was his fourth coach since turning professional.

Murray has elected not to make Corretja full-time and has insisted there is no urgency in the search for Maclagan's replacement.

Todd Martin, whose role coaching Novak Djokovic ended earlier this year, has also been mentioned as a potential coach for the Dunblane-born player.

Other names linked by the press with the role include Sven Groeneveld, Larry Stefanki and Tony Roche.

Murray, who lost 5-7 7-6 6-3 to Sam Querrey in the final of the Farmers Classic on Sunday, next ventures onto court in a fortnight's time for the Cincinnati Masters.

Then on 30 August, the current world number four will continue his quest for a first grand slam title at the US Open.

Speaking after his meeting with Querrey, Murray said: "It was a good week. Disappointed to lose, but if you take the circumstances into consideration I have to be happy with getting to the final. I had a good week, I enjoyed it.

"Each match I felt better physically. I played reasonably well, better than the other matches."
