Federer continues to look like hes lost quite a bit from the form he displayed last year and really it seems like his days as grand slam champion are over, whether its because he's just regressed tremendously or because Nadal and the rest of the tour has improved. The Swiss was unimpressive against Alves, a guy who Fed should smash and even though it was a straight sets win, it was really anything but. Federer was never in danger of being threatened but his performance left much to be desired.

Stepanek didn't really bounce back well after a rugged clay court season and then a pretty demanding couple of matches at Wimbledon but the Czech native is always a threat on faster surfaces because of his ability to be tricky and crafty.

These two met earlier in the year in Rome when Stepanek shocked the world and took out Federer. Although the former world #1 has struggled some I doubt he'll lose to Stepanek in this spot. Federer may no longer be the favorite in this tournament and could in fact lose to Davydenko, Roddick, or Nadal but it isn't happening today.

Fed is a true champ...i think a couple of losses here and there will have done him the world of good...just what he needed to get the hunger back...fed's wrath has been awakened and this match is going to be a complete carve up...step has played the likes of load, guccione and moya this period...he's been beated by load, and moya and gucci have helped themselves to a set off him despite the fact that when push comes to shove they really aren't the cream of the crop right now...would be prepared to wager my first born child on fed to win

I simply can't stand radek so I'm trying hard to put my feelings to one side. He's a gutsy player that keeps coming at you. he has no obvious weakness and has great touch at the net. Howeer, he has no main strength. He's the type of player that will get the better of the very top players when they're having an off day. However, underestimate Roger at your peril. He's a born fighter who knows how to win matches when on poor form. Bar Nadal and Djokovic, every other player on the tour would kill for Roger's record this year. He's than Radek in every departmentand will be gunning to get back to where he belongs. Long live the King. Long live Roger!

right DO NOT JOKE. addin federer into a multi at 1/12 (sky bet) is a great bit of value when betting with huge wagers...even with my multi of roddick federer djokovic and tsonga he adds a worthwhile value to my overall profit. sure some people are sayin 'the value' is in stepanek but he wont win ..so wheres the value? nadal struggled against phau and noone mentions it and ill tell u now federer will get to the final...sure everyone says novak will take him out in the semis but hes gotta beat cillic and tsonga first.admitedly he surely will but its not all said and done just yet. either way federer is gunna turn it on..i have no doubt. anyways fed here for sure.

R.Federer 3-1 (Set betting) <3.85> (Betfair)

Federer hasn`t looked that impressive to me in against his first two little unknow opponents but im expecting Fed to up his game today. As we know Radek bt Fed on clay in there last meeting (Rome) but i felt at least in that match Fed deserved the 2nd set.

Stepanek has a really good serve an is one of the best around the net.I can see Stepanek taking the 1st set in a close set but i still expect Federer to come through

BUNSEN BURNER: Well it`s because I don`t wanna bet against Federer. When you have rooted for one person after so many years, you stay loyal. Of course as a gambler myself the value lies with Stepanek (and I think he can mess things up for Federer, but I hope he keeps his cool togheter! (actually I have a hunch that I dont see Federer passing Djokovic in the semis if he reaches that far...).
It still is a surface that Federer is comfortable on tough!

@ksrinivasan09: The fact of the matter is that there is more than overwhelming evidence to suggest that Roger Federer is on the wane and his once indominable persona and presence is but a thing of the past.

Me, I think Roger is actually beating himself more than his opponents by his approach and psyche. The guy was close to tears before the final points were played out at Wimbledon and he bravely masked the obvious that he is hurting from this episode and the fact that he will NEVER win a French Open unless Nadal gets hit by a truck.

I know what Federer is like - he is a perfectionist and when he was a kid, he berated himself heavily for loses he sustained and would collapse dramatically and throw matches away. One thing about perfectionists is that if you cannot do it right, you may as well not do it at all.

Rodger the Dodger may not be able to evade the shots that Radek will fire. Hold on tightly, let go lightly Roger.

i cant believe so many of you feel federer will lose. hes been to 2 slam finals and 1 semi this year. just because he loses a few pointless matches in small tournaments doesnt mean hes going to lose in the 3rd round of the us open. nadal had to play 2 tiebreaks in his opening round match, and none of you even mentioned that nadal didnt play well either.

Hey! I`m a huge Federer fan as the next guy, but the game against Alves was horrible...yes he did win in 3 sets but he couldn`t close the second set match after 7-5, so many break points down the drain. Was he concerving his strength or stamina for next match??? I don`t think so!
Every player in the world knows that Federer is vulnerable after so many defeats this year, so everybody is trying to take him down.
They don`t fear him anymore, since now everyone has a chance taking him down (while he does so many unforced errors).
I have to agree with "HELEN OF TROY" here. This is a 50/50 match. Stepanek is eying for a double over Federer, and I hope for god sake that Federer wants revenge after the ROME-Masters defeat.

On current form this is a 50/50 match which the bookies are pricing at 1/16 Federer and 7/1 Stepanek. No need to ask where the value lies.

Stepanek will win this, be sure of that. He is in far better form then Federer and after watching the Swiss playing terrible against Alves, one should wonder, what is he doing? Odds on Stepanek are massive as we speak, and this will be a huge win for the Czech.

Roger is not depicting the kind of form which enabled him to dominate the US open since 04...he luks vulnerable once more this year.RAdek has a kind of game that troubles roger...he prevents roger from imposing his rhythm.Radek uses good serving, flat forehands into roger's bakhand corner and then covers the net effectively..he also uses a solid up teh line bakhand to approach the net efectively.Roger is a true champ and knows pretty well how to cope with impediments.I think this matc his a bit risky to bet and i will observe roger's form in this match.I expect a very tough battle here..radek may snag a set or 2 in tie brks.I xpect roger to win bt step has a chance aswell. He also gave a splendid performance against novak last year at teh same stage but was edged out 7-6 in the 5th set.

Well Bunsen I imagine you think I put them there myself? But I can honestly say I didn't actually. and if tennisinsight can identify that then they can back that up. Yeah, I'd say more like Liverpool to Botafogo though.

Ah ok, this is either bravado or you are a bit dim, either way please continue to hide under your veil of ignorance with regards to Fed.... how you have more aces than destroyer is beyond me. He is Arsenal to your Grimbsy Town :|

Roger Federer is a sporting colossal. My sporting hero, my favourite player. The best player in the world. I'm psychic, he'll win this tournament - not so unlucky 13 then..

We all know who's going to win this match --- erm this year -- Stepanek, Murray, Simon, Fish, Blake etc etc --- your logic is 'Fed is the greatest player ever and four times champion here, so he will win easy. Forget that he's in terrible form and looks like losing to most decent players at the moment because Fed is a Champion and will be number one forever in my eyes...... blah blah blah.'

I've just got a big shock there when I seen that (2) next to the name Federer. Federer is looking in good physical shape this week. He's beaten Maxi Gonzalez and Thiago Alves both in straight sets and Radek Stepanek will very soon be added to that list in the same convincing fashion. Dunno why I'm bothering actually because we all know who's going to win this match. Federer will win the Tournament aswell. Federer doesn't even have to be in good form to win the Grand Slams even, just needs a slight step up from past months. Not a cat in hells chance for Stepanek and he'll never beat Roger Federer ever again in his life. Straight sets without any problems.

I see Federer passing stepanek with consumate ease here. Step has not enjoyed a good build up to the USO and Fed is also off the rails at the moment, but on the big points in a big event, fed will deliver. He should be sharp considering Alves went all guns blazing at him and he needed to remain focussed to take him apart

Federer was made to work for his money by Alves in a nice game and now he faces the hard-running showing-off big-lipped muscle man Stepanek. The Czech will have the memory of beating the former No 1 in their last meeting and with the current form of Roger (yes, he is winning, but he is far from the impressive ways of last four years) he may repeat the feat.
