Gulbis is that typical player, like Del Potro, who can overpower Roddick from the back with a supreme forehand, a better backhand and a massive serve, almost equal to Roddick's if he can keep his first serve percentage up. He showed his skill in Cincinatti already, and despite having some downs in his match against Johansson, he never got into any trouble. Roddick has had a very dissapointing US hardcourt season thusfar, with no titles, despite all big names going into the Olympics. He is far too dependent on his serve and despite a decent forehand, he is just mediocre from the back, trying to keep the ball in play and waiting for errors most of the time nowadays. The match is on the racket of Gulbis if you ask me, mostly mentally. He has the quality to beat Andy here and the match-up should suit him nicely, Roddick's matches against Troicki and Del Potro showed this. Great odds here if you ask me. |

Hah! Gulbis in a smash and grab. |

Provided Gulbis doesnt break mentally I see a great chance for him, after shaky start he could only get better, while Roddick of course can put together two good matches, from what I read Santoro wasnt at his best |

The lanky Latvian backed that up with a decent showing at Queens and gave Nadal all he could handle for 3 sets at Wimbledon. The youngster has had the misfortune of really tough draws and has had only 1 uncharacteristic loss since late May when he bowed out to dirt baller Jose Acasuso in Canada. Other than that, the only guys who have knocked out the young Gulbis out of tournaments have been those that are ranked in the top 10. Gulbis, unlike Del Potro, has decided to fore go the smaller events and this perhaps has cost him some much needed matches and some spots in the rankings, still though you'd have to think that the Lat has had a successful summer.
Roddick has been awful ever since an injury knocked him out in Rome and really it seems like he's just getting old. I really, really, respect the opinion and insight that D9 provides but when he says that Roddick has superb athleticism I must disagree with that. At this point Roddick doesn't look like he can do much with consistency except serve but Andy loves Flushing Meadows. Being the animated veteran that he is, the former world #1 thrives off of playing night matches on Arthur Ashe court.
I don't know if I've lost more money than I've lost on backing Andy Roddick. It seems that his prices are almost always over inflated and that the former Grand Slam champion really has left his best days behind him. Gulbis is so much better off the ground its ridiculous and you have to think that once the rally starts that the smart money is definitely on the Latvian. Gulbis doesn't have the serve that Roddick does but his serve is definitely big in its own right. Gulbis won't have the support that Roddick has but during his run at Roland Garros and during his match against Nadal at Wimbledon it was clear that this guy isn't afraid of playing in front of a big crowd. The price on Roddick, IMO, is absolutely ridiculous. 1.40 for a guy who has struggled the way Andy has? If this match were played anywhere else I would assume that Roddick would be no greater than 1.75. I'm not sure if Gulbis has put in the work to take out Andy here but in my mind theres very little doubt that the young European presents tremendous value. |

This is surealy a dangerous 2nd round match for Roddick and before watching his performance against Santoro I probably would have chosen the surprise by Gulbis here (agree with carson in that point). But Andy seemed so focused and his serve was as good as in his best days - and finally the crowd will play an important role to carry Roddick in the next round. The A-Rod in 4 sets! |

First thing I've been looking for in US Open leeder was an opponent for Roddick in 2nd or 3rd round. I think that Ernests is the one who will send Roddick to his home. It is not the same Roodick who was nr 1 in the world before Federer's domination. |

Mentally he's a heavyweight, Karlovic a lightweight. Serve percentage on crucial points is phenominal for Roddick, abysmal for Karlovic. Roddick is beyond patient, Karlovic is not. Roddick may be 6 inches smaller than Karlovic but his serve is better, in all aspects. Roddicks backhand is not a direct threat, but it is certainly solid whereas Karlovic's is a total liability. Gulbis in my opinion could certainly fall to Roddick, I'm not tipping Roddick though because I don't like 1/3. I price it up at 8/15. I hope Roddick gets through because the draw is winnable through to the semis, and he's one of only a handful with a grand slam mentality capable of winning this. It will certainly be a spicier tournament if Roddick goes through here. I'm not tipping it yet. Will tip him through to the semis and maybe further if he gets past Gulbis here though. |
