@carson - he he, yes actually quite often. I just know them very well and I feel there's something possible at Flushing Meadows this year. So watch out for Kohli, Tommy ... and Beck ;-)

I really think Beck is worth a try here just for fun ... I wouldn't bet on Ferrer in his current condition anyway...

i am really quite concerned about ferrer, he used to be one of my confidence players but of late has been erratic to say the least for someone with his credentials. Beck is a capable player so at huge odds I am tempted enough to put a small stake on him. OK ferrer would probably beat beck 8 times out of 10 but im banking I may have got the timing right to take advantage of that other two.

Ferrer ended a 3-match losing streak and some poor form in general this year to eclipse Vassalo-Arguello but not after a torrid first set. The Argentine was spurred on by the crowd and Ferrer looked considerably flat often netting balls off the vulnerable return though he did manage to win 75% and 81% off points behind the first and second serve respectively albeit against a non-threatening player in terms of shotmaking. Andreas Beck carried on his good qualifying run by taking out the local giant John Isner in 3 tight sets, the youngster produced some nice winners when Isner came to the net he also saved all 5 break points he faced and won 82% and 60% behind his serves respectively. The German plays a nice style of game - not only does he have the big serve, but he also moves well for a man of 6'3" and has some good attacking shots without taking note that he is also a left-hander. Ferrer can struggle coping the pace on the harder courts as he often finds himself pegged a long way behind the baseline, and Tipsarevic, Gasquet, Ancic, Johansson, Lopez and Djokovic have all enjoyed success in this department. The Spanish warrior has also lost 10 of his past 14 against lefties and has loads of pressure on him to defend the points he accumulated last year in order to remain in the top 5 at fortnight's end. Beck is full of confidence, enjoys playing on hard and his gritty performance agaisnt Nadal in the first round at Wimbledon this year (where he was broken just twice by the in-form player of the year) suggests that he'll go out there with nothing to lose and is going to cause the out-of-form Ferrer one hell of a nightmare.

Ferrer was workman-like in his straight sets cruise over Vassallo-Arguello and I can see him overwhelming the young German comfortably aswell. Beck caused a bit of a stir in beating home boy Isner and probably shouldn't be underestimated, but this is David Ferrer were talking about. Beck probably isn't experienced enough to cleverly mix it up and not allow David to get into a rhythm feeding off his power.

Ferrer over 5 sets has enough about him to scrap it out with anybody, He is a fighter who despite having no major weapons will always give his best. I dont think Beck can handle this kind of play over the prolonged game and i do not see him getting 3 sets either. Ferrer may be liable to drop a set, but will find a way through
