She has now won 14 of her past 18 matches on the terrain including victories over A Bondarenko, Bartoli, Medina and Srebotnik, but has been known to faulter deep into tournaments when she is looking very good (Eastbourne vs Stosur QF, Bad Gastein R16 v Korytsseva and Indian Wells R16 demolished by Kuznetsova). Dushevina was a very promising junior who actually beat Svetlana and Maria Sharapova en route to the girls Wimbledon crown back in 2002, but it's fair to say hasn't come on as expected since then. She is, however, in some fine touch after taking care of veteran Ruano-Pascual and the big serving Katie O'Brien, which put an end to a run of outs in the clay swing. On hardcourts, the Russian blondey has gone 19-7 since March last year which included wins over Bartoli, Kanepi, Goerges, Cibulkova, Zvonareva and Sugiyama, and she is defending points after making the semis here last year. She gets a fair few cheap points off her first serve which is quite strong and has lots of variety, and Vera always seems to find a good measure between defense (she is super quick) and attack where she can flatten things out nicely and enjoys changing direction particularly off the double-fisted backhand wing. She seems to enjoy using the pace of her opponents on these types of courts with victories over some big-hitting types as mentioned above, and given Wozniacki's mental struggles with expectation deep into tournaments she could very well prove a stern test. The Dane has the match on her racket and is the more likely winner, but until she proves she can go on with her early round promise it's probably worth laying her (that is, in betting terms boys) at odds like this. |

Destroying Sprem yesterday 6-1 6-1 will compound her recent confidence even more. Dushevina is a solid top 75 player and has had some good results this year against Kirilenko, Schnyder, Klebenova and Sugiyama. It must be said though that the Sugiyama victory was the only one on a hard court. Last week Dushevina lost to Sprem in 2 sets so confidence should be high for a Wozniacki victory. In saying that this week has thrown up some indifferent results but lets hope for some normality in this one. |
