Well he would anyway. To me Djokovic is the current world No.1 on hardcourt as he relishes the consistent speeds and bounces, and has the results this year to back it. Sure Soderling has beaten a couple of good names so far in this tournament in Canas and Verdasco, but Canas has been slipping a fair bit since the start of the year and against Verdasco I think he might have gotten a bit lucky. (Verdascos big negative head to head against him would surely have played a minor part at crucial times, and still Soderling had his struggling spells in that match) Djokovic is an underrated grinder and will be much more consistent than Soderling forcing him to err. His form against a tall agile player with a big serve will be good after taking care of Dancevic and his big canadian backing.
I feel Soderling's mental strength is not in the same league as Djokovic's. Djokovic comes in with a head start with his results and if Soderling is on a bit of a high from his souple of wins, Djokovic will still grind him down and wear out his confidence. If Soderling somehow manages to hold it together to take a set to a tie break, he will lose it there.
There's more underdog value in the Andreev vs Nadal game. |

Djokovic was also given a tough match by home boy Dancevic bit will be glad to have come through in straight sets. Two of the best forehands in the business here with these two in what is going to be a total power game. Djokovic defends better than the Swede although that is unlikely to be much of a factor here. Soderling has the bigger serve (Novak's more variety) and after watching him in action recently I'm simply unwilling to back against him here. Djokovic will have blown away a few of the cobwebs away will he is going to have a tough task here and I think Robin is more than capable of pulling this off. I'm quietly confident actually. |

But the Serb, as professional as ever, got back into the groove saving a few break chances early on to clinch the first set in the final game, then recovered from having lost his serve when serving for the match at 5-3 to break the Canadian straight away. That shows good mental strength on behalf of Nole, and he should sense a good opportunity here this week with the departure of Berdych and the rusty starts from Nadal and Gasquet. Soderling was ever so lucky to get through against Verdasco - after dominating the first set and a half, the Swede suffered one of his typical breakdowns as he lost the second set breaker but was fortunate enough to have the Spaniard go down with injury mid-way through the third set and was never the same. The big man has a huge serve and some thunderous groundstrokes, but sometimes his choice of shot and persistence is very questionable. Djokovic has a big edge in mental strength and accuracy in the groundstrokes, and his underrated serve is sure to give troubles to Soderling. The Serb won the match on clay last season which is irrelevant, and whilst the hardcourts definitely suit Soderling more than that terrain, it's also right in the comfort zone of the Djoker who has a complete all-round game. Soderling's only chance is high serve percentages and to attack Novak's second ball, but he was pretty lazy at times against Verdasco in that respect and was fortunate enough to have 12 double faults and many more errors dished up to him by the Spaniard. Djokovic is the defending champion who will be feeling the pinch to stay in touch with Nadal in the hardcourt season, and given Robin's poor efforts here in the past and his incredibly poor 2-17 record against top 5 players in his career it's hard to see anything but a win for the third seed. |
